Ascophyllan is a naturally occurring polysaccharide found in the brown seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum, a marine plant that grows along the North Atlantic coastline. Fucoidan AF Premium includes ascophyllan as one of its notable brown algae–derived ingredients.
Ascophyllum nodosum is a species of brown algae that grows mainly in Scandinavia and North America. It is botanically related to brown seaweeds harvested in Japanese coastal waters and has long been used as a traditional marine resource.
In Northern Europe, Ascophyllum nodosum has traditionally been dried and consumed as a seaweed tea. It is known to contain a broad range of naturally occurring minerals and marine nutrients.
Compared with common kelp, Ascophyllum nodosum is reported to contain approximately twice as much calcium, five times more iron, higher levels of vitamin A, and significantly more vitamin E. It is valued for its broad and balanced marine nutrient profile.
Ascophyllan has attracted increasing attention in academic and nutritional research. Studies have examined its biological properties and its relationship with fucoidan, another major polysaccharide from brown seaweed.
Because both compounds originate from marine algae, their combined use in supplement formulations continues to be an area of ongoing research and development.
