Fucose is a naturally occurring sugar that plays a central role in the structure and function of fucoidan. Fucoidan is a polysaccharide primarily composed of fucose, along with sulfate groups and uronic acids.
Fucoidan is widely found in brown seaweeds such as Okinawa mozuku, kelp, and wakame. Among its various sugar components, fucose is the main constituent and is closely related to fucoidan’s characteristic properties.
From a chemical perspective, fucoidan refers to a group of polysaccharides in which fucose serves as the primary sugar backbone, bonded with sulfate groups and uronic acids.
In addition to fucose, fucoidan may contain other sugars such as galactose, mannose, xylose, and glucuronic acid. The composition and structural formula of fucoidan vary depending on the species of brown seaweed used.
Many fucoidan products display a “fucoidan amount” on their websites. However, it is important to confirm whether this figure reflects the actual fucose-based content of fucoidan or includes other components.
In some cases, the displayed number represents the amount of ingredients added before processing, not the final content after manufacturing. Since ingredient levels may decrease during commercialization, transparency about post-production content is essential.
Because fucose is deeply involved in expressing the functional characteristics of fucoidan, reviewing analytical test results that clearly show fucose content can help you make an informed choice.
